The drive, which is also known as State Route 11, stretches for approximately 20 miles and is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. And it’s only a short drive from Hotel Bellwether. 

For those who are interested in history, Chuckanut Drive also offers a glimpse into the past. The byway passes by the historic Fairhaven District, which is home to a number of Victorian-era buildings and landmarks. Visitors can also stop by the Whatcom Museum, which showcases the history of the area and its inhabitants.

Top Tips

  • Stop by Old World Deli on State Street on the way tograb a picnic lunch as there are few shops on the drive.

  • Bring hiking shoes, Chuckanut Drive hosts Larrabee State Park with tons of great hiking and miles ofshorefront for beach combing.

Chuckanut Mountains

Popular Hikes

Easy: Teddy Bear Cove (.5 miles)

Locals love Teddy Bear Cove for its seclusion and bioluminescence in the summertime. For a less frequented beach, check out the Boat Launch on Cove road for some of the best-hidden tide pools!

Moderate: Fragrance Lake Via Cleator Rd. (5.5 miles round-trip, 950 ft in elevation gain.)

The trailhead is located across from the main entrance to Larrabee State Park, which is at the southern end of Chuckanut Drive. The trail is well-maintained and offers beautiful views of the surrounding forest and the Chuckanut Mountains.

Advanced: Oyster Dome (5 miles round-trip, 1050 ft elevation gain)

The Oyster Dome hike is a bit more challenging than the Fragrance Lake hike, but offers even more breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The best access point is from the Samish Overlook parking area.

Restaurants on Chuckanut Drive

Chuckanut Oyster Bar is a Bellingham classic and one of the biggest attractions on Chukanut Drive. Situated on the hillside with views out to the sound, this spot is perfect for a romantic evening.

If you want to get the freshest Seafood possible, Taylor Shellfish Farms will provide you with a bucket of oysters, clams, or crab, and you can grill them yourself like a local. Bring a bottle of wine and some bread to make a meal out of it!
